APCA Compatibility Matrix — Explore and Validate Color Combinations
Designers often check contrast values manually, testing one color pair at a time to see whether it meets accessibility standards. Inked Colibri makes that process effortless by generating a complete APCA Matrix Table — showing every possible color-pair combination within your current color scheme.
Why Use the APCA Matrix
The APCA Matrix lets you test and compare color pairs visually and numerically — all in one place.
- Each cell displays the APCA contrast value between two Realtime Color variables.
- Values appear inside the colored cell, so you can immediately see how each combination looks and performs.
- Instead of hex or RGBA codes, cells are labeled with RTC variable names, making it easier to identify and reuse those pairs in your design system.
- Just like Color Swatches, every APCA board includes a Realtime Colors URL, so you can restore or share the tested palette with one click.
Understanding APCA Recommendations
APCA (Advanced Perceptual Contrast Algorithm) provides contrast levels that more accurately reflect human perception. Use the following general guidelines when evaluating your matrix:
| APCA Value | Recommended Use |
|---|---|
| 70 and above | Small text, UI labels, or fine details |
| 40 – 70 | Large text or bold typography |
| Below 40 | Backgrounds, decorative elements, or non-essential graphics |
The goal is not to chase a single number, but to balance readability, visual harmony, and design intent.
How It Works
- Open Inked Colibri → APCA Matrix Table.
- Choose which color roles to include (Primary, Secondary, Accent, Text, Background).
- Click Generate Matrix. The plugin will:
- Compare every possible foreground + background pair.
- Display APCA values directly on the cells.
- Label each cell with its corresponding RTC variable names.
- Review which combinations meet your intended contrast levels and mark preferred pairs.
Regenerating the Matrix
Whenever you change or replace your color scheme, the existing APCA data becomes outdated. Simply click Regenerate Matrix to re-evaluate all pairs with the new palette — keeping your accessibility insights up to date.
Result
The APCA Compatibility Matrix is the most reliable way to explore, validate, and document color choices. It lets you see every accessible combination, understand their contrast indexes at a glance, and stay confident that your evolving palette remains visually and functionally sound.
